Turks and Caicos Salt Cay residents survive Ike

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands: After days of uncertainty and concern for the residents of Salt Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) following Hurricane Ike, communication has been established with those who rode out the storm on the tiny island.

According to email reports received by Caribbean Net News, the damage is “massive” on the island, but there are no reported injuries, and the residents of Salt Cay not only survived the 135 mph winds and storm surges brought by Hurricane Ike, they came through it with tenacity and determination.

The residents are apparently doing the best they can to clean up and bring organization to the chaos Ike left behind, and they have not lost their faith or love of country, according to the reports.

The runway on Salt Cay is reportedly useable, and as soon as relief efforts can be deployed, the residents are in need of the following supplies:

Bottled water, heavy duty work gloves, face masks, non-perishable food items, roofing materials such as galvanized nails, paper, and ondura, tarps, plastic trash containers or plastic boxes with lids, mosquito spray and mosquito nets, treated lumber (2x4, 2x6, 2x10, and plywood), diesel generators for refrigerators, personal hygiene products such as baby wipes and hand sanitizers.

Relief Aid and supplies can be shipped to the following address with “FOR SALT CAY” marked clearly on the containers.
